Pearl Necklace Length Guide: How to Choose the Right Fit
Two pearl necklaces can look completely different on you — and the pearls themselves often aren't the reason. The length is. A 16-inch strand hugs the base of the neck, while a 20-inch one rests below the collarbone and changes your whole silhouette. Here's how to choose the right length for your build, your neckline, and the way you like to wear pearls

.
Pearl necklace lengths at a glance
- 16 inches (collar): sits high at the base of the neck. Suits slender necks and open necklines. Classic, dressy, and timeless.
- 18 inches (princess): the most popular length. Rests just below the throat, on the collarbone. Flatters almost everyone and works with crew, scoop, and V-neck tops.
- 20 inches and up (matinee): falls below the collarbone. Suits taller frames and business or evening wear — and pairs beautifully layered over a turtleneck.
How to measure for the right length
Wrap a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string, then measure it against a ruler) around your neck at the height where you'd like the necklace to sit, and add about 2 cm for comfort. That's the length that will sit exactly there on you. Most adults find 16 inches is the tightest comfortable fit, 18 inches the all-rounder, and 20 inches a relaxed drop.
Match the length to your neckline
- Crew neck, turtleneck, or high collar: choose 18–20 inches so the pearls sit on the fabric rather than hiding inside it.
- V-neck or scoop neck: 18 inches mirrors the neckline beautifully.
- Strapless or off-the-shoulder: 16 inches frames the décolletage like a classic collar.
Neck size matters more than height
Two people of the same height can need different lengths — neck circumference is the deciding factor. If your neck is on the slimmer side, 16 inches may already rest comfortably; with a fuller neck, 18 inches can feel like a collar and 20 inches becomes the everyday length. Measure rather than guessing: 30 seconds with a tape saves a return.
One length or layered?
Pearls layer beautifully. An 18-inch strand with a 20-inch (or longer) gold chain is a favourite combination — and if you mix metals, our guide to choosing gold or silver for your pearl jewellery will help. Keep the pearl strand shorter and the second piece longer so they don't tangle.
