How to Choose a Freshwater Pearl Necklace in Canada

Shopping for a pearl necklace? Here's what actually matters — and what jewellers hope you won't ask

Real vs. imitation: the 30-second test

Real freshwater pearls feel slightly gritty when rubbed gently against your teeth. Glass or plastic imitations feel perfectly smooth. Every pearl we sell at Golden Rose Arts is a genuine cultured freshwater pearl — no coatings, no fakes.

What determines the price

Size. Everyday necklaces typically use 7–9mm pearls. Larger pearls (9–11mm) cost more because they're rarer.

Lustre. This is the big one. High-lustre pearls reflect light sharply, almost like a mirror. Dull pearls look chalky no matter their size. Always buy for lustre first.

Shape. Perfectly round pearls command the highest prices. Slightly off-round or oval pearls — like the ones in our Essential collection — give you the same lustre for much less money.

Metal. Sterling silver (S925) keeps a pearl necklace affordable and is perfect for daily wear. Solid gold raises the price but lasts generations.

How long should it be?

  • 16 inches (choker): sits at the base of the neck, best with open necklines
  • 18 inches (princess): the classic — rests on the collarbone and works with everything
  • 20+ inches (matinee): better for business and evening wear

If you're buying your first pearl necklace, 18 inches is the safest choice.

Caring for your pearls

Pearls are softer than most gemstones. Put them on last (after perfume and hairspray), wipe with a soft cloth after wearing, and store them separately from harder jewellery that could scratch them. With basic care, freshwater pearls last decades.
